Need some guidance on what to apply to cedar shakes to make them last a longer and delay sun/water damage. I have one new roof (shed/barn)that’s 5 months old and one 12 year old roof to work on. I would like to use a tank sprayer to apply so I’m guessing it probably should be water based material. This topic may have been brought up before, sorry for the repeat. Suggestions??

The same stuff you can spray on to freshen the look will make it age faster.
The goal is not attainable

The Cedar Bureau is fairly vague on this topic...

Yes, well they certainly are vague. My roof, the older one, isn't in bad shape and is holding up well. One or two of the ridge shakes are kinda ugly looking but when I installed them I used another layer of 30 lb felt under them so as long as the sun doesn't see the paper it's not going to be a problem. I'll be replacing one or two in the next month or so and thought I'd apply something over the whole roof to inhibit sun's effect and check for buildup in the side spacing etc. Thanks all for the ideas.

From what i saw on a recent project, you should've went with a copper ridge cap. House had 15yr old shingle roof with several copper dormers. All the cedar under the copper looked brand new. Wherever there wasn't copper, the shingles were black and moldy.
