We are planning to do a 2 story roof that has a very visible porch roof on the first story – however the porch roof is too shallow for standard shingles.
I am thinking we need to lay rubber roof under the shingles instead of Titanium and then put the standard shingles on with the rubber sealing around the nails underneath. Is there a better way?
BTW it’s a old brick house so we would bring the rubber up under a cut- in counterflashing, then put a metal L flashing under the counterflashing and on top of the shingles. They have had a chronic leak at the joint between the porch roof and the brick – as you would expect with just a tarred joint.
Tx in advance for taking time/troule to answer this

What does that mean?
3 tab shingles can be installed down to 4/12 on standard underlayment and down to 3/12 with I&WS as an underlayment.
Dimensional shingles can be installed down to 3/12 on standard underlayment and down to 2/12 with I&WS as an underlayment.
Rubber (I'm guessing you are refering to EPDM) is not an option under shingles nor is shingling a slope less than 2/12.

The porch roof has less slope than 3/12 yet the rubber roof wouldn't look right.
Less slope than 3/12
You're still making us guess. What is the slope? If it's 2/12 or more it can be shingled with archys over I&WS.http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
I'm making you guess about the pitch because I'm guessing - I haven't had time to go up there yet - but I think it's between 2 and 3. The ice shield sounds like the way to go to me. Thanks
Just thinking out loud here... he has a covering that will need to be put on something too shallow for its rating.Assume water will get through. Instead of shingles then I&WS, what about a layer of rain shield - the covering with gaps designed to let water flow over a flat surface over the I&WS?This way, any water that gets past the shingles still has easy access out over the I&WS.

Look, just send me to my drawer. This whole talking-to-you thing is like double punishment.
Maybe you should consider a metal roof.
(CONSIDER A METAL ROOF) - those choices aren't always up to the installer.
Rubber roof would be a wastew of money unbder sshingles. 2/12 can take sshingles at 4" exposure over ice and water shield.
Less pitch than that and any effort to use shingles is a waste of time and money
