How long should a shallow well pump seal last- the shaft seal, ceramic?
Mine fails and starts leaking about every year- for the last two on this pump- pump before that seals lasted about 8 years.

If good quality an installed right, decades.
The bearing usually goes before the seal. One pump I have is on its 3rd bearing set and still the original seal, about 25 years. If the seal is installed even a little bit crooked (wobbly), it fails pretty fast. Some cheaper seals the rubber hardens and leaks.
As Junkhound indicated about the bearings...... If the bearings are bad then the seal will fail fast due to the shaft being wobbly.
i use mine mainly to water the lawn so it gets a lot of use (not a drinking water thing- sometimes its on all day- thats why I asked about the life of the ceramic bearing- unlike a regular "lip' type bearing bearing you would not think that a touch of shaft motion would affect it?
To determine how long a pump will last, one has to ask how many cycles has the pump had.
