Can anyone recommend a cost effective seam tape for OSB wall sheathing? I choose not to wrap the homes I build in house wrap because I do not think its advantages outweigh the material cost and labor , but would like to seal the sheathing seams to reduce air infiltration. Finish siding is usually fiber cement lap siding. I have dismissed Tyvek tape as I don’t find it sticks well to rough surface of OSB and would not use duct tape as it degrades quickly. Any other suggestions?

Good question.
Another thought would be to caulk the seams.

*I use a vapor permeable tape that adheres nicely to OSB with parallel strips of butyl calk. My experience has been with insulated panels and its use on all panel joints. It provides an air barrior, and will still allow vapor to pass through. The product is distributed by Windlock Select in Pa. Try them on the web @ http://www.hotknife.com Ask for Dean, and refer to it as SIP tape. Tell Dean I said "HEY"It works!Good Luck,Al
*Does your tape protect the OSB from wind driven rain during the construction process?Or how about incidental moisture that gets behind the facade?Do you tape every seam to include the sill plate and band joists?
*Sonny: I rarely use duct tape for anything, even if it is the official state tool, up here. Much better is 2" black pipe wrap which is moderately sticky and works well when exposed. I've left it sunlight for several years and it is fine. The foil tape sold for use on ducts is very sticky and, being metal, ought to last forever, but I don't use a lot because of the price. Lastly, vapor barrier tape (to seal seams in 6 mil poly vapor barrier) is very sticky and seals well. It ought to last a long time under cover, but I haven't tested it. It's red at my building supply. Cheapest per foot is probably the vapor barrier tape. -David
*I would glue the edges of the OSB while installing on the wall, then stand up the wall...Next...glue the plate down...and all other exterior seams...near the stream,ajIf you really want a tight home, then you should use SIPs.
