Anybody have any pictures of shed dormer framing? I’m wondering mostly how the dormer sides get built…on top of the doubled roof rafter or nailed off to the side somehow or something else I haven’t thought of? I’m also wondering about how one might frame the dormer to reduce thermal bridging at this joint.

I've built 4 shed dormers in my long career (42 years). Always placed dormer walls on top of sheathed double rafters. Roof and snow load might sag a wall nailed to the sides. You can frame the walls on the ground after getting the main roof pitch. If you have help and the weight is not prohibitive , sheathe the walls while it is on the ground. Not up on thermal briding, as I understand it you are trying to prevent heat loss. I'm sure someone can help you with with this .
