I’ve run across something I just don’t get. I’m building a shed following some guidelines in a shed book. In this book the author suggests that I attach a 2 x 4 along the the length of the bottom crossbeam of the end trusses such that the 2 x 4 is flush with the bottom of the crossbeam effectively widening the “footprint” of the crossbeam to 5″ (1.5″ for the crossbeam and 3.5″ for the perpendicularly mounted 2 x 4). Then, when positioning the truss he suggests that the perpendicular 2 x 4 should be placed flush with the inside of the wall. In my mind this puts all of the weight of the end truss as shear force on the screws/nails holding the perpendicular 2 x 4 onto the truss. This just doesn’t make sense to me. Am I not picturing this correctly, or what? The point of all this is that the end trusses are supposed to stick out over the end walls a bit for visual interest. Can anyone out there help me understand?
