Good Morning,
Wondering about the pros and cons of Butthangers and EZBackers- what have been your experiences, or have you chosen to make site built? I am going to try to tie into some existing rock with butt joints.

Hey Zen, I never got back to ya about the board stretcher.
Here goes a thousand words. say ya need a 1x6 @8'...all ya got is a 1x12 @6' slice the 1x12 from corner to corner length wise..you now have 2 triangles...slide the hypotenuses along each other to get to 8' or more..glue them back together.
Now trim off the protruding ends and re-rip to final size of your 1x6...see?

Well, I alluded to using certain species, by that I meant not a really knotty flavor.LOL
Oak works pretty well as does maple..either a coarse straight grain, or a fairly inconspicuous grain...even plywood will work ( with splines or biscuits)..if its to be painted, anything goes.

Use the butt-taper system. Much better than the Butthangers and EZBackers.
