I’ve got some drywall work that needs to be finished because the homeowners boyfriend was mostly finished when they split up.
Anyway, there is one section of 3/8 that’s only on one side of a door. The other side is 1/2. I’d like to add an 1/8 inch layer so the casing lays flat. What material would I use here? I mean, other than a skim coat of compound.
Replacing the section is really not a convenient option because the drywall runs behind a cabinet which can no longer be removed since it’s locked in place by a soffit above and cermic tiles below.

An eighth isn't much.
Mud it up if stained trim
Shim the casing and caulk the gap if paint grade.
Or rock the casing when cutting on the saw, make it lay as it will lay on the wall, with the outside edge lower than the inside edge.
Now you know why the guy left.

I really think that in the end it will be as easy to use the door jamb as the "level stike off" and skim coat out 14" to give you a reasonable flat for the casing.
The other alternative would be to glue a "sliver" of a shim on the back of the jamb casing. Scribing and ripping the sliver will be fun.
If you are having to do finish mud anyway....just do the skim coat. It should bo over with in 1 heavy coat and 1 or 2 finish skim coats.
