I do some work for a HUD type building (but in Canada). This place has steel studs for 2 walls and concrete block for the 5′ section. I had to remove the cement boarded tiles in the bath and re-install due to wall/cement board separation, and I ran ito a problem where the steel studs were not even across their face at the control/outlet side. The studs were so bad that the whole front was bowed out 1/4″ at the centre, and at the top the wall was not even straight. Even though the management is not concerned, I hate doing a job like that.
My tiler just shrugged and did his best.
How do you full time pros lay up the underlay when the walls are deformed and there is a bow/deformity in the steel studs?

Warning! Be cautious when taking any advice from me. Although I have a lifetime of framing experience, some of it is viewed as boogerin and not consistent with views of those who prefer to overbuild everything...including their own egos
Additionally, don't take any political advice from me. I'm just a parrot for the Republican talking points. I get all my news from Rush Limbaugh and Fox and Friends (they are funny...try them out)!
Thanks Blue, but the slang confused me.
Do you use mayham on the poor unsuspecting steel studs until they conform to your will?Quality repairs for your home.

Yes...basically I do what ever it takes...shim...sister...replace or a combination of all three. It's impossible to give a definitive answer without being there.
Also, keep in mind that most glues will shim up to 3/8". You mentioned a 1/4" bow...so it appears to me that skilled board hangers could ceate a flat plane without much trouble.

I use butt strips and glue them on with spray adhesive (like 3m super 77)
That's an idea. Thanks.Quality repairs for your home.
