I’m getting conflicting advice on the use of a shingle ripper to remove cedar wall shingles. On guy told me that you hook the nails than bang on the ripper with a hammer to cut the nail. Next guy told me ripper is supposed to pull nails out, not cut them. Who is correct?

Kind of depends on the condition of your shingles...some cut, when the wood is sound, & some rip out, when it isn't.
You also need an end cutter or nipper to pull out the rest of the ones that cut off. Or you can drive them in the rest of the way.
Good luck with your project!
SLATE ripper. Cuts Copper nails. Generally pulls steel.
both.
Best if you can pull the nail down with the hook, but sometimes all that does is break the head off as it bends the nail so you can't get it again, then you turn to the cutting tip. The tool is made for both possibilities so neither one is right enough to win a bet.
