Can anyone direct me to a thread or give me a good reference on how to flare out the starting coarse of cedar shingles two inches or so. Is it OK to just attach a slightly beveled 2×2 ledger to the bottom of the sheathing?
Thanks.

yes it is..
might want a 2d smaller one at the nail line so the nails don't bridge
Thanks Mike,
good advise on the second smaller ledger.
And this topic leads me to the question of "why"? Many of the 100YO houses in my neighborhood have brick on the first floor and then either lapboard or shingle siding at the second floor. I assume that the brick is a 4" thick "veneer" over wood framing and that the shingles/siding flares simply to cover the brick and that they do this with ledgers like you described. (I'm in Kansas City) It this right?
yes , that's right... but most of what we're describing is shingle- style victorian "cottages"
very elaborate.... much artistic red cedar shingle decoration

Is only the bottom course going to be flared?
I think I have heard this referred to as a 'swale' (sp?). Does that ring a bell for anybody? I've seen a lot of shingle style with this feature. The Woodshed Tavern Backroom
