shingling a gambrel/irreg hip/shed roof
Having finally gotten–with plenty of your assistance–the irreg. hip and then gambrel (mansard?) roof built, I’m about ready to shingle it. Have read through what I can find in the archives and my FHBs but thought I’d ask before I start. The pic shows the hip/gambrel (pitches of 4 , and 8 in12), with a shed roof off to the right.
1. Presumably ice and water shield doesn’t negate the need for a starter course of shingles?
2. Does it matter, other than cosmetically, if the shed roof shingles don’t ‘line up’ with the hip roof shingles?
3. I’ve seen it recommended to cut off the part of a full shingle that laps over the hip rafter, and I’ve seen it suggested to just bend it over and nail it down. Preferences?
4. I hope to work the hip courses so that the change from 4 to 8 pitch falls near the middle of a course, and then just bend it over, adding cement if necessary?
Thanks once again!

(I still have that bit of drip edge to install, and a small amount of flashing to figure out at the intersection of the hip rafter with the closest jack and overhanging decking, but that’s another story. <g>

Ice and water shield definitely does NOT negate the need for starter shingles. There was even a thread here on BT about starter shingles - Maybe last year?
I remember a couple of threads about shingles on gambrel roofs, but they would be from a couple of years ago. Did you find those? There were several pictures, if I recall correctly.
Bending the shingles over and using cement is what we did on my Brothers gambrel roof. I didn't really like the way it turned out. I think one of the other methods suggested here on BT would be MUCH better.
Hope you and Slot B are doing well.

What did you NOT like about bending the shingles over your brother's gambrel?I did find ####number of old threads on hips/gambrels/mansards, but don't think they exactly addressed my issues.Thanks.

I didn't have any trouble with the bending of the shingles - I just thought it looked kinda plain afterwards. The appearance of the roof is just a lot of shingles. Some sort of trim or transition from one roof to the next would have looked better.
When your photo is taken for your driver's license, why do they tell you to smile? If you are stopped by the police and asked for your license, are you going to be smiling?
Waht you have barely hint6s at being a gambrekl.
I would run the steep side first, that breaks asa a faux gambrel, and just run shingles right over the break. Cut them as they overlapthe hip.
Then shingle the face suide shed ebnd of the hip.

piff,You been drinking? Or is it me?Tab A--are you leaving those rafter tails on the shed roof exposed?
That is the current plan. Will paint and see how they (very old, dense lumber) hold up.Thanks all.

Reason I asked about the tails is that you could have a critter problem. Make sure to seal off the rafter cavities at least with hardware cloth. Otherwise you'll have everything from bugs to birds to racoons up in there.
Blocking, sheathing and siding will keep most everything out of the building. I'LL keep everything out of the exterior. <g>Thanks.
take a look at the "exploding thermal glass thread, willya?
