Does anyone know the principles behind an in window air conditioners? I can’t cut a hole in the garage, and need it cooled down.
I have one and up till now have had it sitting by the door with a dam of wood, that exhausted everything out the door of the garage.
What I was thinking of doing was hanging it from the ceiling and then making a backplat that exhausted through the attic. The question is since the side (air intake) is still in the garage, what problems will I have or what about inneficcientcies that I would have with it taking in the same air it is trying to cool? I do understand that it will need to pull in air that is going to replace the air that is is going to exhaust

An air/con unit is a heat transfer device. It absorbs the heat in a small finned panel and transfers it to another finned panel. air is blown through to disapate the heat. if both panels are in the same room the heat would just go round in circles. just like leaving the fridge door open. Unless you can install in a window or hole in the wall, stay with the door setup.
*SteveYou need to have complete separation between the "inside" part of the AC and out "outside". If you cut a hole in the ceiling and put in a drop down box with a hole in it for the AC then that box/attic become the "outside". The problems are getting the box big enough to move enough air around it and hot air in the attic. Also the window AC is desgined for condenstion to run out the "outside" and drip down. So you need some way to handle that.
*SteveThe drawing that you emailed me has the right concept. But window AC, at least mine have vents all long the sides and the back. And the blowers are designed for free air space. You will need much more than larger and/or more vent duct.I believe that they make AC that are designed to work like this. They come with vent hoses for the hot air side.
