I am planning a 1 1/2 story, 20×26 shop addition to the garage here in Iowa. It is -4 below zero now, 6 months ago it was 95 degrees. I would like to “go the extra mile” insulating it.
My question is, what would be the best way to spend extra time/effort/money for insulation? 2×6 vs. 2×4 construction? Spray foam vs. fiberglass bats? Adding rigid foam to the outside? What about “reflective insulation”?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul

I live just down the road from you(CR area), and I'm remodeling an old house in the Amanas. I'm going to have a combination of spray foam and cellulose in my upstairs/attic area.
I will have 1" foam sprayed on and then do as Mike Smith does with his ceilings, strap them, apply mesh and then spray in cellulose to fill the rafter cavity.
I'd like to spray the rafter bays full of foam but that's more money then I want to spend on that particular job.
If you can afford it the spray foam will give you the best insulation money can buy. I'm going to have to settle for something short of the best money can buy!
Damn cold today. I seldom have to work outside but today I tore a wall open and did an add-on to accommodate a shower. It took me until noon to get closed back in, man working in -10 is not for me! Damn ice tea was sitting 30' away(inside the house) from where I was working and it partially froze. That's about enough of this BS for one year.
