Please share your views as to whether or not pressure treated fence posts should be set in concrete. I’m building a fence (it’s really a railing) on a trail that goes down a hill at my house. The trail was built using cut and fill. The posts will also serve to support 2×10’s that will act as mini retaining walls to hold back the hill. Anyway, I’m wondering if the posts should be set in concrete. The soil is very soft, so I intend to go as deep as I can, probably 3 1/2′ to 4′. I had planned to use concrete in the hole, but now I’m wondering what the concrete will really add. Is it really just adding mass? Because of the soft soil and the double duty supporting the retaining, I feel that the posts need all the lateral resistance they can get. Because the soil is soft and sandy, it doesn’t compact very well.
Any thoughts?
P.S. The trail is long and downhill, there will probably be 80 of these posts.
