Evening Breaktimers, <!—-><!—-> <!—->
I know there are some excellent deck builders and designers in this community and I’m hoping you’ll all take a moment to post photos of your deck projects here.<!—-><!—->

There are five Strap Shot nailers to be had for the editors’ favorites (and it would be nice if at least one prize went to a regular on the forum). But, you can’t win if you don’t play. . .I mean post.<!—-><!—->

Good luck, everyone!<!—-><!—->

So are we really doing that or is he gonna goof off again this year? You got a deposit check yet??
Lemme know; I'm doing a shopping cart full of small stuff right now--the big cedar shake roof hasn't coughed up the dough for a start date yet.

Was going to accuse you of procrastination until I realized you were in Canada. . .You'll probably miss this contest, but post your project in our regular Project Gallery as you're building. Your peers can learn something from you (and I might get some good shots to put on the home page). Good luck with your neighbor's deck (I'm guessing if you'll have to look at it every day, it's going to be really, really nice).Robyn
I'm trying to upload one but it's taking forever.
Nevermind, it works. The maximum image size is 1200 pixels, not 4000 as the instructions say.
Nevermind again, my boss doesn't want me using photos of the house with my favorite deck out of courtesy for the owners. Dang.
Edited 4/24/2009 6:41 pm ET by Mike_Maines
Dang is right. I bet it was a beauty. When you do post something, photos should be no smaller than 400, but no larger than 1200. Call me if you ever have any trouble; I can help.Take good care,
Robyn
Hi,I have trouble. Why no smaller than 400kb? I store mine smaller than that. Those of us on dial-up don't work in such a large world.I have posted some, but it indiscriminately locks me out at other times. I'm on my way to try it again.

I prefer stone.
I'm a stone patio kind of guy.
We're just going to have to come up with another contest then! I wouldn't mind a gallery full of pics of beautiful stonework. We might get some great outdoor kitchens, don't you think?Robyn
here is my deck that I built.
do you need my mailing address yet? lol

Yeah, all it really needed was a little moderation.

Just saw this. Here's a few pics of a deck we rebuilt a few years back. Pls. excuse the B&W photos; this was pre-digital and I shot them in B&W for use in a print brochure.
The deck isn't fancy--an unroofed deck of 40' x 6' with a 12'x6' wrap-around to the entry side of the house--but the framing of the original decks had rotted out twice in the previous twenty years and the second time, it almost took the wall of the house with it. In addition, it's high above a sharply sloping mountainside running down to a lake, with nowhere convenient to land posts.
So we devised a frame supported by long knee braces running back to the footings, and a 40-foot-long built-up beam that had to be assembled in situ using custom fabricated steel brackets to hold it all together. We also took measures to ensure that it won't rot out again.

BTW, could ya make that a roofing nailer instead of a strap-shot gun? I don't use joist hangers.... ;-)

Hi Piffin,
Thanks for the heads up!
I've been really busy in the corporate world of BMC West. I am their "Senior Marketing and Design Rep." for the deck division. I'll get some pictures of the decks we have been building.
I've been working 10 hours a day on a new deck display at the office as well.
Now that the sun is finally out the phone is ringing off the hook.
Pictures to follow. I promise.

This is a "Ulin" deck we did. Ulin is a hardwood that goes down blond but turns a dark purple in two weeks. It all has to be pre-drilled and set with trim head torque drive screws."Rather be a hammer than a nail"

Sorry about the file size. Maybe one of you guys under 30 can resize these shots :-)
The planter box was the last thing built so you can see how light the wood is when you install it."Rather be a hammer than a nail"

Nice, but looks like it could be the poster deck for hidden fasteners.
Stainless steel Tiger Claw Hidden fasteners are nice if you have pre-grooved deck boards but I will never biscuit joint another hardwood deck for eb-ty's.
I prefer the Stainless trim head torque drive screws because they are better for keeping the the deck boards from cupping in our damp climate."Rather be a hammer than a nail"
Bob
that is what I use too. The ones from GRK are far better than the Swansecure line - those ones break way too often.

GRK Those are the ones- $495 a box of 3500- Don't forget to put that in your bid."Rather be a hammer than a nail"

I can understand all that, but with the SS screws, I look at my own cedar deck and to me it appears that I dropped small washers that just happened to fall in neat rows.
That's why use trim head screws. They practically disappear.

Can't seem to upload any photos.
I seldom do decks unless they are part of a larger project and I'm feeling greedy. I don't have any digital photos, just some older scans and I can't seem to do anything with them.

I don't know about the rest of you but I find the title of this thread to be very suggestive.
A moderator should look into changing it or at the least, moving this thread into the tavern where almost anything goes.
It's disgusting the way things have gone in the recent few weeks around here.

Why the dbl standard. Those blowhards in the tavern open their mouths with complaints surrupticiously (however you spell that word) or these elusive "customer service" personel start yanking it and you wish me to sit idly by as this no doubt suggestively titled post goes un-noticed?

I recal seeing an announcement of winners and looking at the page, but right now, I don't see it there anymore and that page acts like the contest is still open for entries. Just one more glitch in the long line of site problems over there in that Gallery...
