I just finished a remodel on my master bedroom shower. I opted for a shower surround rather than tile. It is a standard 42″ size. I need a shower door. I am 6’6″ and so want it as tall as possible. So I called a custom shower door glass company. To get – installed – a frosted glass, antique aluminum shower door is $1,500.00. That is NOT a typo. I really need to door to go to the top of the surround so when using the shower I do not spray water all over the outside. But I cannot justify $1,500.00. That’s a lot of bud Lite.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Mike

We got ours at Sears, about 30 years ago.
Use a shower curtain?
We install lots of frameless glass shower doors. That price sounds about right.
I paid $1200 for a 3/8" tempered glass piece with the hardware not installed in Canada. I assume you were thinking frameless? Framed versions (MAXX offers a few) will save a few sheckles, but that is only assuming you find one that fits your RO.
Sounds about right to me. That's a lot of tempered glass.

You're right, that isn't a typo. ;-)
I'll second the Maax idea. It's definitely worth checking out.
That is a custom size, and that is a very good price for installed.
You could try this from Kohler but it would be DIY http://www.us.kohler.com/onlinecatalog/product_result.jsp?module=Glass%20Showers%20&%20Doors&category=12&subcategory=129&QS_0=All&QS_1=Bypass&QS_2=All&QS_3=72%22+to+78%22&QS_4=36%22+to+51%22
If you measure and install yourself it is alot cheaper. And have money for a bud light after it is done.
in my experience, he'll need the bud light before he is done!
Check eBay. Friend got a custom frameless for $600. Measure carefully, he missed by +3/8. Figures he can use the "extra" for a new shower downstairs.
I'll chime in with my solution even though it was a 60" wide shower.
we used a standard high kohler bipass door and put the top rail on top of the walls of the Aqua Glass surround and had the aluminum side bars attach to the side wall. almost perfect height and the 60" unit only cost $250 through Lowes. I had to scribe the top frame maybe an 1/8" onto the top of the acrylic/fiberglass sides to get to the perfect 70 5/16" height.
I believe that they make a a taller semi stock unit. I know for sure that Lowes stocks a 42" unit in the height I used(northern calif). This is/was a frameless glass door.
Maybe this will work, maybe it won't.
It really looks like it belongs and is a cheap solution.
Thanks for your sage advice. It was sticker shock I guess. Somehow I thought the shower itself should cost more than the door. But I will keep looking.Mike
Well let me know if you find that "Holy Grail".
I've got a home project that is stalling from the
same stickershock.

Was it 5/16th glass? Sounds about right for a custom cut door. We had a $1500 door on a job once. Most of the cost was the custom cut.
Family.....They're always there when they need you.
It is a 'custom' fit door. The shower head was raised by 8" from standard height to fit my taller family. 2 boys who are above 6' and I am 6'+ as well. So I wanted a door that was taller to keep splash to a minimum. For $1500.00 we can shower on our knees!I budgeted for $500 and thought I was well above the necessary amount when I do so. Live and learn. But thanks for all of your advice. I just need to start saving so I can use this shower in the near future.Mike
