I’m remodeling a master bath that consists of 2 rooms; one 5′ x 8′ with 2 sinks (on the 8′ wall) opening through a 27″ pocket door in a 5′ wall, to the 2nd room (5′ x 6.5′) with a toilet and then a 3′ x 5′ shower. In demolition mode I removed the plastic shower pan and discovered some light mold (mimicking the reinforcing pattern of the pan) on the slab on grade. I also found a 12″ x 12″ hole in the slab surrounding the ABS shower drainpipe. I’d like to tile the floor of both rooms and install a curbless shower using a CPE membrane under the entire floor and 6″ up the walls. My current questions are: 1. what is the best way to fill the hole in the floor so that I have a solid base for the membrane and tile? 2. Without cutting the pocket door I have about 3/4″ to install the membrane, morter bed and tile. Is there a membrane that will work on the surface of the morter bed for this, since I don’t have the depth for a 2 layer morter bed? 3. I’m considering a surface membrane over the cement backerboard on the walls. Is this “better” than 30# roofing felt or CPE under the backerboard? The shower I’m replacing failed after 12 years. I’d like to do better that with this shower.
Thanks
