… and today I let them know about it!
I got there at 7:30 this morning to get a few sheets of 1/4″ drywall and other misc. stuff I needed. Soon as I started toward the drywall isle, pushing one of those rolling racks for lumber and such, one of the employees quickly grabs the accordion-like isle blocker and says “Sorry sir, I have to close this isle off for a few minutes.” I told him I only need 5 sheets and he replied it will be just a few minutes, they have to use the forklift in the next isle over. So no problem, I just go about getting the other stuff I needed – screws, orange bucket, ez sand 90, primer…
I get back to the drywall isle and it’s still blocked off, with several other contractors waiting with their rolling racks at hand. I waited a few more minutes but my patience wore thin. So I check to see the other isle only to find 3 depot employees standing around BS-ing, including the guy who cut me off originally, and the forklift sitting empty.
So I ask how much longer it’s going to be.. I have to get to work. The guy who cut me off said “I told you sir, will be a few minutes,” while he looked at me like I was sh*t and went back to BS-ing with his co-workers. So I went and shoved the rolling gate thing open and went ahead and started loading my drywall, The other contractors followed me in and did the same.
Then the idiot kid with the attitude comes around the corner and says “Excuse me sire, what are you doing? This isle is closed.” I told him his few minutes is up and I’m getting my drywall, which I did and headed for the checkout.
Outside, it’s kind of windy. And I have to lean the drywall up in my van because of the shelves in back. The wind keeps blowing the door closed on me and I keep using the edge of the drywall to push it back open.
All this time there were 4 employees standing around by the contractor’s entrance watching me. Not a one of them even looked like they were tempted to help me out, as if it’s their job or something.
On the last sheet there was a sudden gust of wind, which almost pushed me over, and the door hit the drywall and busted it in half. Now I’m really pezzed off. I put the broken sheet of drywall back on my cart, locked up the van and headed to the contractors entrance. On my way in I mentioned to the slackers by the entrance that any one of them could have given me a hand, and they just looked at each other like duh, duh, duh… I’m on break at 8 in the morning or shift hasn’t started yet or whatever they were thinking.
Inside I told the guy at contractor checkout what happened and he, seeing I was not in the mood to go to the returns counter, told me to go ahead and grab another sheet. And so I did.
When I got back to my van, ready to fight the wind and the door of my van again, I got to wondering why I’m giving this sh*thole of a store my business, and couldn’t come up with any good answer. So, instead of loading that last piece of drywall into the van, I took the other sheets out and put them back on the rolling lumber rack, along with the orange bucket of other stuff I purchased, and the ez sand 90. I took it all to the returns counter and returned it, and told the clerk why. She just looked at me with a blank stare and asked if the merchandise was undamaged. I said yes, she refunded my money.
I drove another 1/2 mile or so to Lowes. Got everything I needed without any problems and they asked if I needed a hand. Yes, I said, thankfully. I shared my story with the clerk as he helped me load the drywall. He just smiled. Duh Home Depot just lost my business for good, and I think he knew it.
And that’s our story for today, kids. Ya’ll have fun now! =)

It's amazing to me that even in this economy they are still idiots. They are not the only ones, but they do seem to have the most on staff.
Ted.
Is there no drywall supply around to take the edge off? You keep up this kind of lifestyle and you'll end up waiting in line at the cemetary.

I'm spoiled, but getting less so as the economy, HD's etc dominate the landscape.
Decent lumberyard-2mi's
Decent hardwares-2 mi's.
Cab suppliers-5-15 mi's
Specialty Plywood supplier-12 mi.
Lumbermans Distributorship-10 mi.
Drywall supply-steel studs etc 2 mi.
Stone quarry-2 mi.
Used to be lumberyards in every quadrant I worked-so no more than a 5-10mi drive for material.
Since-4 have closed. Now my longest drive might be 20 mi's from any one location.
Might be gas money-but beats the time lost in a box store.

Calvin,
I've got that same problem, spoiled by quality suppliers near me.
We have a major hardware store in are area that is family owned since before time that has everything in stock, even their parts dept is well stocked. I can't remember the last time I had to order anything from there, they just have it on hand always. Once I had a old Rockwell tool that needed parts, owner took one look & told me, Ya wait a second, back room, comes out with the parts. This is a huge, modern, well layed out place.
I once went to HD to buy an Bostich pumatic floor stapler & got it to the job, head seals were blown out, looked like the box had been opened, took it back and had to jumped threw hoops to get service, of course it was the only one they had, they could order a new one, ORDER? I DON'T ORDER ANYTHING!, I'VE GOT A JOB TO DO!.
Told them , I Just Knew It, Looks Like Someone Returned It & You Guys Just Put It Into Stock Without Reguard To If It Worked, Screw The Next Guy!!
Told the manager that I coundnt beleive they only had one floor nailer in stock, He replies, We really don't sell that many of those, I said, guess I coundnt really expect a little Mom & Pop operation like Home Depot to stock much, He said , We really arent after the contractors just the home owners, REALLY?, Think corporate would like to know that?
Manger ask with a attitude, What do you want me to do? I told him to refund my money, He gives me the old, Corporate will have to send you a check after your check clears. Sorry, but I lost it, long story short, I left with cash in hand.
Went to my regular hardware store, confessed I went to HD, The guys turned their backs on me and after some pleading they agreeed to sell me a nailer, of course we all laughed, Great bunch of guys and all are well trained in their depts.
I asked, by the way, how many floor nailers do you have in stock, answer, full pallet.
So remember, Its Spring, Lets build something togerther!!!
Damb Bobby, got that stuck in my head!!
No one should regard themselve as "God's gift to man." But rather a mere man whos gifts are from God.
This is why I use my local yard. I go in, I know everyone, we shoot the s***, I drive into their warehouse and they help me load up.. or sometimes even better I call it in, or the sales guy stops by, and they deliver it for free when I want it. Not that I'm bragging or anything.
We did get a lowe's in my town a few years back, and I do go there on occasion, but I get that dirty feeling after... kinda like when I go to wal-mart.
there was a time when you could not get away from the store employees. now if they see you could use some help they beat it the other way
the other day I was at HD and there was a girl in the front aisle by the check out asking every one who walked by how they were doing. I gotta think for that same salary there could be an attendant helping load trucks outside
I cannot understand why people still push those carts with square wheels around the lumber aisle when you can go to a lumber yard and back right up to the lumber and someone will load you up, and better quality stuff - for the same money
I cannot understand why people still push those carts with square wheels around the lumber aisle when you can go to a lumber yard and back right up to the lumber and someone will load you up, and better quality stuff - for the same money
We think alike. When I go to the lumber yard I ususally pick and load my own stuff.
I never understood why someone would want to load a cart, then unload it and reload it into a truck.
When I see what some of these guys look like I understand a bit better.

I guess I'm just a creature of habbit.
Often I'll also need a couple of hinges, a sack of crete, some plumbing or elec. parts, etc... and if I can get it all at one place it sure saves a lot of driving. If I speciallized in carpentry or drywall or something else, my first inclination would be to go to a speciallized store. But then again, I'd be walking away from 90% of my already slim pickins of business. So my first inclination is to head to the nearest one stop shopping.
Well, now it's the second nearest.

>>"I cannot understand why people still push those carts with square wheels around the lumber aisle when you can go to a lumber yard....."I used to feel the same way. That was until recently, when "the local yard" started giving lots of excuses as to why my material orders were not arriving.I heard every excuse in the book, over a period of a few weeks. All the while, my customer was getting peeved at me.I did a bit of digging, and learned that "the local yard" was on credit hold with virtually every supplier -- they couldn't order anything, until all previous shipments were fully paid. The next nearest local yard is about 45 minutes out of my way, so the big box gets some business. Even though I hate 'em.I agree with the original poster -- their customer service skills must have been learned from the soup n a z i.
Politics is the antithesis of problem solving.
Ted - I gotta ask .... what are you doing with 1/4" drywall? I'm just curious - I can't imagine the application ...
And I've reached the same point as others - I refuse to sort through the #### lumber at HD, although I do still give them some business for other stuff. For lumber, I go old school - just order it and have it delivered - the quality is always primo and the price is nearly the same.
Bill.
A few days ago I used it to veneer over a kitchen ceiling. Today I did the same for the stairway walls going down to the basement. It's a quick fix for bad plaster when the customer doesn't want the demolition, understandably. I use 1/4" because I'm lifting it up there myself. If I had a helper or a lifter I would have used 1/2"
As for ordering lumber, I rarely need enough to justify delivery. I get paid by the hour whether I'm on the job or picking up materials, so best option is for me to pick it up myself.~ Ted W ~

My Home Depot story, I went in one evening to get stuff for early the next day. My local yard was closed and I wanted to get an early start.
I had my pretty orange cart loaded with 5/4x12 decking and some other PT lumber. probably about $300.00 worth of stuff. Waited patiently for the guy at the contractors check out to get off the phone. Told him I was ready to check out.
He told me to go to Self Checkout! Left the cart sitting right there and went to Lowes.
Another time I had some DW a prehung door and othe misc items. This time there were 4 people at the contractors desk one on the phone, one on the computer and two more standing there with their thumbs up the ***. Got told to go to self checkout again.
So cart was left in the middle of the isle again went home and canceled the credit card and have not been back.
This happened about the time their CEO was fired with that nice big severance deal.I emailed the asking why they could pay whatever the amount was (can't remember now) but could not hire cashiers and told them the story.
Got a reply offering me a 10% off coupon.
Only problem I have had at Lowes is when I got 50 sheets of 5/8x12 firerated DW for have price and had it delivered. I told them where to put it and sent my helper to show them. I get a phone call from the helper saying they will only set it in the yard. They wanted $2.00 a board to touch it. Was the first and probably the last time Lowes will deliver anything for me.

Been pricing framing materials to repair / rebuild my deck. Local lumber yard (co-op) qouted .51 cents higher for 2 x 10 fir & .03 ftmore for 2 x 4 than a lumber yard 20 min. away. I emailed this morning to lumber yard 20 min. away with my order ofFir : 12- 2 x 10'sx12 ,6-2x10x16, spruce. 28- 2 x 4' x 12 & 4- 2x6 x 16. I whould pick up after 5 today. As I was 5 min. away , they phone & asked what I was bringing to pick up, I said my 18 ft. trailer, they would band the order. They give me another 10 off. Paid them ( & got air miles) Done by 5:30. Why deal with people that don't seem to want your buisness ? There are lots than do whant your buisness? (replacing part of deck with a roof, 2 x 4 for rafters. Rest of deck framing is all fir ( NO over priced treated which was 2 X cost? ) including 4 x 4 posts. 2 x 6 Joists will be culled lam sock from Western Archrib which have plant in town & my son works there & decking 5/4 cedar)
"Local lumber yard (co-op) qouted .51 cents higher for 2 x 10 fir..."You went 20 miles away for a half-cent price difference?BruceT
Worked out to over $140 saving for 2 x 10's. Figured I get the 2 x 4's & 2x6's also. The additional 10% was on to of the .51/ foot lower price, .89 / ft for 2 x 10 fir, compared to $1.50 per foot!!! I drive 20 miles for that kind of $.
i hate to say this in public, but i'm in a home depot or lowes every day and sometimes 3 times.i have a huge lumber yard down the street another mile from them,go there about 3 times a year, they are higher, the quality of lumber is really no better and if you don't spend 500k a year there they don't know who you are and don't care.
lowes has the best store with out question. wider asiles,no junk sitting in the way and very seldom are the forklifts running, only if a customer needs something up high.
home depot is always cluttered and them dang forklifts are blocking asiles all the time.i go there because they have somethings i like better and also a few items lowes doesn't.no way will i buy a 2x from them,hd's lumber is really bad.
but that said if you expect much help loading in the store or outside both are pretty dismal, here lowes might be worse about helping load.they are diy stores in every meaning of the word.i do think the manager sets the tone for each store.
2 weeks ago i need some kitchen base cabinets from hd. now why they stock the bases up 3 shelves high and the 15 uppers on the bottom i don't know?? anyway i need a36 base,it's up high, look for help, none. so i get me a ladder and go after it. grab one get it to the floor it's broke.go after #2 i kinda drop it,it's broke. go after #3 as i'm pulling off the shelf i lose it,drop it from 8'. you shoulda heard the noise! did anyone come check?no way. so i left 3 busted bases sitting there scatterd all over.by the way it says on the box "do not drop damage will occur" [don't think i busted #1] and went to the next hd ,got 1 on the first try.i didn't even feel bad, wish a manger would of shown up,we would of talked about putting big cabinets on floor and little ones up high.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T

DUCT TAPE.
#2 i kinda drop it,it's broke.
ROFLMAO!!! Good thing I wasn't drinking anything while reading that!
I get treated pretty well at the better lumber yards in my area. Evanston Lumber has fantastic service and top quality materials. Hines and Lee Lumber are pretty accomodating, and products are top notch. But like I said in my prev. post, I usually need more than just lumber. I'm a handyman for the most part, so I'm often tackling 3 different trades in the same day. I can't drive all over town gathering the different sorts of materials I need.
Now, if I build a deck or install some windows, then I go to Evanston Lumber for as much as I can get there, but only one trip. If I need a couple more 2x4s or some shims, Lowes saves me 1/2 hr of driving. I have to be realistic and my customers don't want to pay me to drive way further for basically the same thing.
When I did a Trex deck last year, Evanston Lumber said they could order it. I stopped by Lowes and they have it, the color I needed, right there on the shelf. And, it was about 10% cheaper. So I bought all the treated lumber from Evanston, and the Trex boards from Lowes. It was a no brainer.
HD, by the way, had a stack of the same color I needed, tosses around like a salad and all scratched up. ~ Ted W ~

Absolutely true story. Monday I was at the HD in Ft Myers buying electrical stuff and I couldn't find a "T" conduit body.
Hand to God the orange vest watching me said. "That's why they call it a do it yourself store. If you need to find something, DO IT YOURSELF" And he walked away.
I've never encountered somebody that bad at HD, but I'm not really surprised. I imagine that guy didn't last long, even at Duh Depot.~ Ted W ~

I keep hearing these horror stories and don't find it like that at all. My local HD is in the center of our town surrounded by 2 lowes and 1 local lumber yard.
I get better service at HD than the locals and lowes and I have had 1 too many arguements about taking things back without reciept.
They also employ 3 handicapted men that will help you load, and return carts. Another reason I like them!!!
I keep hearing these horror stories and don't find it like that at all...
As one poster mentioned, it really boils down to management. I'm glad for you that you have a well managed one nearby. I wish I could say the same. As for hiring the handicapped, Kudos for them. That would be one of the things keeping me coming back too. ~ Ted W ~

In regard to hiring the handicapped:
Many states will waive the workmans comp, and unemployment insurance fees, and give you at break on other taxes/fees they normally collect just to keep them off the well fare rolls.
So, some of you might want to look into hiring one or two as helpers. They are usually really hard workers, and loyal to a fault. They rarely call in sick, in fact they will tend to come in even when they should stay home. I had one come in once with a fever of 103, and viral pneumonia, and had to spend most of the day getting him into the hospital. But he was never late, and always did the best he could.
He works for a friend now who is a finish carp, who says that once he figured it out, he does a great job. It took longer to train him, but he now does top quality work, and isn't reluctant to ask for help if he hits a new situation and doesn't know what to do. He still can't use a tape measure or calculate numbers, but does well with story sticks.
You do have to remember that many of them are very literal, so if you have them doing clean up, and tell them to vacuum anywhere they see dirt, they might end up outside.
And, training them to be safe from the start is imperative. Because they will do things exactly like you showed them.
that they did...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming<!----><!----><!---->
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
"Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints"
That's one of the reasons the store manager's name is on every receipt.
I would have gotten close enough to that helpful employee to read his name tag and reported that BS to the store manager.
Depending on the manager, employee might get fired, reprimanded, or promoted - you can never tell.
Jim
Never underestimate the value of a sharp pencil or good light.
Why even bother with self service #### anymore? Is your time and gas really worth the hassle?
When I was doing stuff professionally one call to the local yard by 3 pm and I could usually have my stuff delivered the next day.
Very nicely written, you did the right thing by opening the F-ing gate the telling that little punk kid off!.
Ill tell you, in the last three years I've changed , used to be such a easy going guy & now I tell people like it is, Damit I'm 48 now don't have to take #### from anyone anymore.
When I get service like that I tell the offending employee that their lucky they don't work for me & my company because I do the hiring & firing & with performance like this they would be out on their ####. Most time they just stare at you, they don't get it.
Keep the Rage & change the world!!

From Huffington Post:
"A November 2006 report by the City of Oakland's Measure Z Oversight Committee came up with similar figures. It estimated that Californians consume between $870 million and $2 billion in medical marijuana per year, generating sales-tax revenue between $70 million and $120 million. In 2004, when Oakland's clubs were thriving, it took in, according to city records, $2.3 million in taxes on more than $26 million in revenue"

It can be entirely legal by state and local law if you follow the rules.
It is entirely illegal by federal law, which supercedes state and local law.
However, it is happening openly, people are paying sales, state and federal taxes, and most drug busts are made by local authorities.
It is an interesting thing, to be sure.

I'm partial to my local, but they don't always have a great selection, so if I need something different, I go to Lowes. My best experience there was when I bought a ton of wood flooring, and ended up having 5 unopened boxes left over because of changes. I took it back, but didn't have the receipt, and they had put the stuff on clearance since then. So my 5 boxes were worth $25. The service desk girl tried to override the price, and when that didn't work, she managed to pull up my receipt by using the credit card I paid for it with. She then credited my card for the full value of them. I'm sure most places would have said tough luck with no receipt, but they were beyond nice.Definitely made me switch to their store when I have to go to a big box.

Must be a regional thing. At the three closest HD to me here in Huntington Beach/Costa Mesa, the staff fall all over themselves to be helpful and friendly:
"Have you been helped?"
"Can I help you find something?
"Thanks for shopping with us."
"We don't stock what you asked for, but here's a list of other stores that may have what you want."
I think all the stores are different..lumber yards included. At my HD they're REALLY helpful when I need something loaded onto my a cart or into my van and about $6 for 1/2" drywall and about $9-10 at my lumber yard...that REALLY adds up.
My drywall supply house near me is actually pretty expensive so I never go there unless I need 1/4" DW which no HD near me stocks....nor do they stock 10-12 footers.
One of the things I love about HD or Lowes is the return policy. Super EZ to return anything where my lumber yard charges me a restocking fee most of the time.
F-that!..and i have 3 yards right around the corner from one another. One that I always used.....for years.... till one too many times gave me such an attitude when I questioned the pricing for materials from a set of plans that I refuse to ever walk into that yard ever again...kinda like you feel about your HD.

Your story doesn't surprise me a bit. Iam at the gas station and paslode rep is there getting gas, I strick up a conversation and he tells me that Home Depot is selling cordless framing nailers for $300.00. Iam not in market but thats a good price, (pssst Iam a tool whore) anyways go to depot and guy gets nailer off top rack with ladder.
Go to express check out and machine notifys gal that she's suppoused to offer me extended warranty. She shouts out across two ailses in the most obnoxious voice you want a warranty with that, I say excuse me but doesnt tool come with warranty. (Now I know what she's asking me for.) She agains says you want a warranty or not in the most condesending attitude , I say you know I don't even want this tool.
Out to parking lot and as Iam leaving guy that got tool down is standing out in lot, so I drive up thinking maybe he's there to apologize for the bad attitude of sales clerk. I say guess you know where Iam going to buy this tool, Lowes right next door. He then tells me I dont give a ship where your going I came out to see if your name was on truck for I would never send any work your way.
I call management of store and they ask me to write them a letter as to what happened, piss on them I got better things to do with my time. Lowes gets all my box business now which can be any where from 50-75K depending on year as most of my customers are from out of town and it makes it easy for them to make selections when they are miles or sometimes states away. Plus I have yet gone into Lowes when I had a cart full of material and not been asked if I needed help loading materials. So Iam also of the crowd thats gave up on home depot. Plus I saved a additional $30.00 on price matching plus 10%, which was cool but wasnt looking to play that game when purchasing tool in first place.
Whats great is that they morons are attituding themselve out of jobs in the long run if all goes well

It is a shame what these stores are raising young people to be, I sometimes feel it is more helpful to tell them working at HD is not the real world and in the long run the poor skills/habits you acquire here will be your undoing in a real job.

Got news for you, they brought those skills with them when they were hired.
Thier parents, school and TV taught them all they know.

I just found out to graduate grade 12 you need Mouth Breathing 30, Bad Attitude 30, IPod Flipping 30, Math 10, English 0.9 , Social Studies 0.5 and Science 0.01.In another life I am going to be a guidance councilor in a high school! To those who help our challenged workers, thank you for your patience, yes they are dedicated workers and they will remember you for ever.I have had off and on service at the Big Boxes, usually the older folks are better workers and do understand "stuff"I went to a Canadian Tire (big chain) and asked for a certain plumbing fitting said we don't have any. I asked if he could get on the computer and check if one is in the other store of in the basement. He sighed and went and tapped at the computer. Yup we have one down stairs was his reply. and just stood there, I asked if he was going to get it?" well if I have to".As I was waiting the store manager came by and asked if I was being helped? I said Barely. Explained the scenario and he just replied you can't get good help. I offered to work Saturdays for a 1% commission. Blank stare He just could not wrap his brain around hiring someone who knew something, versus minimum wage. HMMMM
Go to express check out and machine notifys gal that she's suppoused to offer me extended warranty.
That is probably the biggest pet peeve I have at the checkout process. They choose to cut costs by employing fewer cashiers, and they program the computerized replacement to stop my transaction for an extended warranty inquiry.
That HD employee can be fired for those actions.
They built a home depot here and i went for one job.
By the time i figured my time i LOST money monkeyin around there so back to my local lumberyard..
Plus the guys at the local lumberyard actually humor me by listening to my lame jokes i stole from the joke thread.
The people working at HD seem to have the same far off look in there eyes as the people working at fast food stores and the DMV.

I don't do this for a living but with renovating 4 houses, I got to be a regular @ our local yard, Wickes, long gone.
2 times they drove the forklift to deliver to my hose 8 blocks away. Delivered my roof shingles & landscape timbers, drove the forklift down the middle of the road real early when traffic was light. Then made a return trip to pick up over purchased bundles.
Only thing that HD had over them, I could go to HD @ 8pm or Sunday!!
I miss Wickes
somebuddy said here at sometme...
shopping at HD is like sabotaging yur own work...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
