I am assisting Mom come up with a design for a home she is going to have built in 1-2 years.
Energy efficiency is an important issue for her, and as a result we have had a few people suggest SIP’s. The high potential R-values and seeming ease of construction look promising, but I have to admit that I’m not 100% sold on the idea of her living in a particle board house. I realize OSB has come a long way, but I’m still haunted by the particleboard of my youth… the stuff that when it got wet, would either disintegrate or would turn into a wet noodle.
In her current design, she is considering using the SIP’s for the exterior walls. Interior walls would be stick built, the roof would be standard truss or rafter. She is shooting for R-30 walls and R-50-60 attic (vented roof), full insulated basement.
Anyone out there using SIP’s? Do you like or dislike them? For those who like them, can you recommend manufacturers?

If you decide to use SIP's, might as well use them for the roof as well. Maybe someone else has better ideas. You may be interested in the discussion "OSB or Plywood" in this forum. OSB has come a long way. I believe SIP's a pretty highly recommended.
