I have to sister on a couple of stringers tommorow and my question is this.Is there a way to make a template of the existing stringer while it is in place(up against a wall)or do you just measure and transfer to the new piece for cutting?thanks for all the help!

Wow - either way sounds like a pain. My question: can't you just sister one or two regular 2x4 or x6 along the solid back of the stringer -- that's the load-bearing part anyway. i'm assuming strength or bounce of a free-spanning stair is the issue ... have to cut some of these tomorrow myself. I try to get one stringer right and then trace it onto the others. ... no, you said "up against a wall" -- are there treads? is it time for my nap?
*Dan,If this is for strenght and removing some deflection in the stairs, try what andrewd suggests. I typically scab on 2x6 to the sides of my 2x12 stringers in new work. If you are making the stair wider, get the overall rise and run of the stair. Cut the ends of the stringer of appropiate length,(measure long to short on under side of existing stringer) top with a plumb cut, bottom with a level cut and lay it next to the existing stringer. Then just pencil in the risers and treads and cut.
