My wife and I are in the process of planning a major remodelling for our 1950s ranch. The plan is to put a 15 foot wide addition across the length of the back of the house (making it 45 feet wide) and up one side. This side addition would then extend out the front of the house 13 feet and would be 22 feet wide. The plans call for the existing gable roof to be removed and replaced with a hip roof, with a gable covering the 22 foot wide section and a second gable also 22 feet wide on the other end of the house. Overall house length is 61 feet. The gables peak to base are 5 feet tall. My problem is that every time I look at the front elevation of the house the gables seem to be dwarfed by the size of the hip roof. Does anyone know of any aesthetic guidelines for calculating gable size or have any opinions regarding the same? Any thoughts on how to finish a gable, especially if the goal is to obtain a bungalow-type look?

Im assuming that the gable roof on the front transitions into the hip slope along the side of the house, both roofs having the same pitch. To increase the size of the gable, you would need to increase the pitch of the hip. Another option would be to have intersecting gable roofs on both the main residence and the new front portion.
Hawkeye....an Iowan?? Where are you located?

Thanks for the response. We live in Iowa City. You are correct on the assumptions. My design problem (if it is one) is that if I increase the pitch of the hip roof I make it appear even larger. I hadn't thought about the possibility of intersecting gables and will sketch it out and talk with our builder re: same.
