I am creating a trey (pic?) ceiling in order to clear some plumbing in my 100 year old house. I have a large octagon created out of 2x’s in the center of the room. I am going to attach plywood 10″ wide to the outside of the octagon. Then I want to attach joists that radiate from the plywood to the walls. None of these joists will be longer than 5′. Should I use 2×4’s-2×6’s or even metal studs? I really need some feedback as I have no desire to wear dry wall on my head. Thanks

I don't know of any span tables for ceiling joists that really are ceiling joists with no load from above at all and no chance of there ever being a load there.
I'm sure that 2x4's would be plenty strong enough so I'd use 2x6's cause 2x4's just look silly in a ceiling.
*Ahh yes when in doubt overbuild. Come on let the guy put up the tiny 2x4's.
*I appreciate the feedback, so 2x4 or 2x6?
*Absolutely. 2x4's or 2x6's. That'll do it.
*Metal studs are preatty easy to work with too.Barry
*So if I combine all the things I've learned-I should use steel 2x5's on the horizontal. That is the solution!
*Five feet (or less) span. All its gonna hold is 1/2 inch drywall. 2X4s will work.Davo.
*Have you considered, maybe, using 4x2's for the cieling joists? ;)jim
