I just stumbled across a program called SketchUp for design visualization. I’ve downloaded the 8-hour demo and the tutorial videaos and am going to get around to playing with it soon. It looks really interesting.
Has anyone here used it? If so what do you think?

piffen: i read the joe stoddard link and the comments
i opened the sketchup tutorial... and watched the "sectioning"..
seems to be very convoluted.... what am i missing... i can do "concept" in Chief.. and i'm pretty sure you can do the same in Softplan...
do you see any use for this for someone proficient in CAD ? who already owns a good CAD program ?Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
I'm not sure, Mike. It's all new to me. I'm kind of impressed with the gallery they show but that's always the best of the best anywhere.
At SPLASH, there are a couple guys who like it for preliminary concepts.
I am weak on freehand sketches of conceptual work. I'm not sure how this program works really. I didn't download the tuttorials for demonstration because I don't have the players they use. I had them once and they messed up my machine with conflicts and crashes. I'll see if they have a CD demo. I supose that it has 3D shapes that you can stretch and edit into the shape and size you want.
I can certainly do conmcepts quickly enough on SP for simple work but multiple floors and wall heights on complicated work is time consuming to get it right. By the time I do, I've almost got it all done. If the client doesn't like the concept, I go back to square one.
Let's say that I'm interested enough to look into it more and if it were only two bills I would have it for a toy, if nothing else, but five makes it serious tooling. If thje drawings could somehow be converted to a real CAD drawing, It would definitely be worth it to me. As it is, the savings seeem like they would be in letting me creat 3D symbols more easily. SP V12 is on the horizon so it may have these advantages built in.
Count me curious. I'm sure that ten years from now, the programs we are tickled with will seem barbaric.
You and I have decent programs to use but for ACAD users, I'm sure this is honey on the toast...

Thanks for the link to the other thread. Funny that I should stumble across it independently of Jerrald. I'm a fellow Mac User. I saw it on Soe Stoddard's forum at JLC as well.
I thought it looked like a very quick and intuitive way to do 3D massing studies. The price is awfully steep for that though/ I've also been toold it's a quick way to make symbols to bring in to Chief and such.
I've got Vectorworks too, but it's more tool than I want sometimes.
I'm going to stumble through some of the tutorial videos before I start the clock on the 8-hour demo.
