While replacing the tub/shower mixer valve in my 1987 home I noticed a 1ft x 1ft formed access window in the concrete slab where the tub drain ties into the underslab drain lines.
The window allowed the plumber to tie-in the tub/shower drain after the slab was poured and the tub set, I get that. But this is termite country, shouldn’t an opening to underslab soil/substrate be sealed or treated in some way?
Any Building Inspectors out there? What does the IRC say?
Thanks,
Earl

100% of the soil under the slab should have been chemically treated for termites before the pour per code in our area. Good idea to seal it off for radon and to keep humidity and such from wicking up into the house but standard Operating Proceedure to leave it open.

yes, after the plumbing install, fill with wet cement, not concrete put just portland cement, no sand. that way it can be broken out if had too.
A wet cement seal; that actually makes sense. I'm sure the tub drain will have to be replaced when the shower unit is replaced. I was considering closed-cell polyurethane foam but I might have to rethink that idea.
