We are in the process of designing a two-story custom home, and would like to know if 16″ x 16″ slate tiles would be an appropriate material for the exterior of the house. These would be used in conjunction with stucco, where one might normally use stone or brick. We haven’t seen many homes with such an extensive use of slate, and wondered if it would be inadvisable. We live in the Pacific Northwest.
Thank you.

Can't advise you, but I can tell you they've done it on sizable portions of the exterior of Arizona Tile in Albuquerque, NM. They might be able to tell you something about it. I can tell you it looks pretty stunning. I plan on wainscoting the exterior of the entry area and deck of my next project this way (stucco above). One concern I would have is that, if you're in an area where you could have freeze-thaw cycles with moisture present, you might have spalling (small pieces of slate popping off due to ice forming under flakes).
