Or, to anyone –
What do you think of using Titanium synthetic underlayment with nail/staple caps under a new slate roof? I’ve always specified 30# felt. Would the plastic caps create a bit of an irregular surface under the slate?
TIA –

I am no Walter, but have done a few slate roofs. The last one , I did exactly as you are suggesting , the slates I was using were irregular enough that the caps made no difference whatsoever.
I never use the plastic caps on asphalt though because I think the would quickly show through.
Jeff,
In the past I've always used 30 lb. felt too - laid so it's double covered lots of times.
Recently I've started using Titanium too. I have a Hitachi button nailer I use for both felt and synthetics - it's better than the staple ones I feel.
On most button locations it won't be directly under the very top of the slate so it's not an issue. Where the button and nail is directly under the slates top I simply use the nail claw on my slate hammer to pull the button off and sink the nail a little deeper.

Beautiful work Walter, and as always, thanks for the reassurance.

Jeff,
How big a slate roof are you doing, and what kind of slate is it?
Thanks for the kind words, Walter
I'd say about 18-22 squares, Vermont gray.
Jeff
Hey Walter -
I noticed they used Permafelt on the timberframe job. You see much difference between it and Titanium? It's about $30/roll cheaper than Titanium here.http://grantlogan.net/
Today we's learnin' about rawks. They's all kinds of rawks. These [picks up rock] is rawks which you throw. These here [throws rock at Rusty] is rawks that you get hit with. E.Cuyler
Grant ,
The GC's laid the Perma felt using my Hitachi nailer - I helped sheath one side, but they dried it in.
I will know more about it once we start laying slate there. I'll install my copper drip , then 2 courses of Grace in place of the synthetic felt.
We've got a couple courses of Sieger snow guards to install to retain the snow from cascading down onto the future metal roof below.
I'll be posting a lot of the RW slate install so I'll know better about the two types in awhile.
