I’ve got an elderly customer that wants to replace an old 6-0 x 6-8 aluminum sliding glass door with a new wood door for security reasons. I’ve ordered the door and side light and I’ve got to wait 5 weeks before it arrives because they want laminated glass instead of tempered for security and it takes that long because of the lam glass. The question I have is what kind of ideas do you have to demo out the old slider and not cut the existing siding to get to the flange. I’ve thought about just going around the edge with a sawsall and cut the flange off at the transition / caulk joint between the frame and the siding edge and pulling it out that way. I don’t want to cut the siding itself yet because I’m wanting to center the new door in the opening and the slider is not centered in the opening now and if I cut the siding to get out the slider the new brickmold may not fit exactly where the siding was cut to get to the flange. Does my dilema make sense to any of you?
I’d be interested in hearing your ideas.
Thanks

BjR,
I have done what you describe with a window. It can work out fine. The biggest potential for problems has to do with water getting in. If you have a decent overhang it should be a simple job. Detailing the opening for watertightness and proper drainage planes can be hard if the door is very exposed.
If the siding has some flex to it, paper and/or flashing can be inserted under the old siding to create a drainage plane, and integrated with the new doorjambs. If stucco, it is best to break it back enough to detail the edges properly, then replaster.

How difficult was it to hack through the aluminum frame? How long did it take? Did you use regular metal or bi-metal sawsall blades? I'm not too worried about water intrusion as it's under a deck but I'll still flash it properly across the head and put paper down the sides under the siding before I caulk the brickmold in with Sikaflex. I'm just not looking forward to hacking it out along the edge to not damage the siding.
Try cutting the frame into quater sections and prying out the sections individually with a flat bar between the frame of the door and the frame of the house. This way the sawzall doesn't get close to the siding. The aluminum nail flange will easily break around the nails. You're entitled to sh!t.---Tony Soprano
Ripsawing the frame was not too hard. I used a Super Sawzall (11amp) with bimetal 14 tpi blade. The cut took about 5 minutes for a small window. Only used one blade. Just relax and let the tool do the work.Doors vary in thickness. Some flanges can be fatigued off by bending to and fro, while others are very stoutly made. Carpenters vary, too. Some windows/doors are nailed off every 6", and I've seen ones that had only 4 nails.Bill
Being you're in the "Breaktime Fests" folder I thought you wanted to do a demo on sliding glass doors this Aug cept all we have here are seven pairs of twin hinged glass doors ....oh well
