I think I have read (and possibly seen) screws with small heads. I am doing some cabinetry and need to use screws for some of the joints. Small head screws might make it possible to fill the holes with wood putty as one would with finish nails.
Thank you for any info

Go to http://www.mcfeelys.com and look for trim screws. They have a wide selection.
Sometimes you can find trim head screws in HD-Lowes, but they are pricey. usually 2-1/4" long, and they take a small square driver. A drywall supply house will stock them much cheaper, but sometimes they will only sell by the pound or the box.

Another vote for McFeely's. Good quality products, and excellent customer service. I use their screws for my woodworking, and have never broken or stripped out one of their square drive screws.

You're looking for "trim head" screws. Basically like a drywall or deck screw but with a tiny head, usually square drive but occasionally Phillips.
Any decent hardware store should carry at least a few basic sizes.

Third vote for McFeely's. When I'm looking for something special, in quantity, or better quality, I usually order from McFeely's.
