Smoke detector, where do I put it?
Specifically where do I put the smoke detectors in a rec room with a walkout basement with an open (one wall and no door) stairwell? The room is 15 x 24 with the steps on one end. I am going to use a 120v smoke detector so it can be linked to the rest of the basement (when it is finished) and to one add to the main floor.
Thanks for your help

Bump.
I know they are to be mounted 4 to 12 inches down from the ceiling in a bedroom, but how far from the corner? And what about the stairway?
Check the directions that come with the detector. They give a good description of where the detector should be mounted. Also check with your local builing inspection department for their requirements.
Thanks for the help. I will have to ask the man who will put his seal of approval on it , the electrical inspector.
IIRC those instruction give a number of places where it should not be mounted.Basically dead corners and intersection. If the instruction's don't prohbit it I think that I would mount it on the ceiling near, but a few ft from the stairwell.Natural convection should cause any smoke to move through that area.
>>I know they are to be mounted 4 to 12 inches down from the ceiling in a bedroomreally? I thought is was minimum 12 but am drawing a blank right now.For the main question: think like smoke: where will you go first?

Here in Central CT, they used to put one on the WALL, 6" down from the ceiling, a foot or so from the door, at the top of the basement stairwell. That was 17 years ago.
But the alarm companies are putting them on the ceiling at the bottom of the stairway, just where it "bends" to start up the stairs.
Thinking like smoke, I can see where they both would work. In fact, when Iwas goofing around in the shop down the basement that resulted in some oak smoking in my table saw (gotta get a new blade!), both systems went off at almost the same time.....
