Of course just after I passed up buying a 12″ CMS on sale, my 10″ Dewalt CMS starts smoking. It’s not constant, maybe every 3rd or 4th cut or so, I’ll see a little puff of smoke in the air with the sawdust. Anyone have a clue as to the cause of this? It doesn’t seem like the blade is hot, so I’d have to guess it’s something in the motor.

Dull blade.
I did cut some laminate flooring recently. Maybe that is the culprit.
Try a new blade. If the motor is smoking you will smell a chemical like odor usually. If the blade is smoking, it usually smells of wood smoke, also there will be some brown marks on the wood sometimes.
If it's in the saw dust it is most likely the wood burning
Can you hold the laser level while I shave?
>>>I did cut some laminate flooring recently. Maybe that is the culprit.Yup; that stuff is nasty. Whenever I cut laminate I buy the cheapest possible disposable blade and save my good ones for proper trim work. The good news is that good quality carbide blades can be sharpened many times. If there's not a sharpening shop in your area it's worth shipping them.Scott.Always remember those first immortal words that Adam said to Eve, “You’d better stand back, I don’t know how big this thing’s going to get.â€
What's reasonable to pay for getting a blade sharpened, and what do I look for in the yellow pages? Blade sharpening?
About 25 cents per tooth.Use a service with computerized, high tech equipement...one that grindes the sides of the teeth flat with the plane of the blade body (not just the front and top edges of the teeth).Ask a local cabinet shop or woodworking shop who they use.
I'd buy a new blade if you have the one that came with the saw, they aren't usually worth sharpening. Although, a good sharpener can sometimes improve it from what it was when new. Look for sharpening services in the yellow pages.
Do make sure to get a miter saw blade, as opposed to one used on tablesaws, miter saw blades have a 0 or negative hook angle, a positive hook will dig into the workpiece. Everybody seems to have a favorite blade, but the cheapies are usually no ones favorite. I like Freud blades.
If I was to buy a new blade, I'd probably buy another Dewalt miter saw blade. Would that be any better/worse than the blade that came with the saw? I'd assume not. So, is the orginal blade on a Dewalt CMS not worth sharpening?
There's worse, but they have a poor reputation. I'd go ahead and have it sharpened if you want. Probably 10-20 bucks according to the number of teeth.
What basswood says below is about right. Around here they're in the Yellow Pages under "Sharpening". Google might help you too.Scott.Always remember those first immortal words that Adam said to Eve, “You’d better stand back, I don’t know how big this thing’s going to get.â€
Alright all youse.....I want anyone who is solving their dull blade problem by buying new tools to send all your old tools to me!! Ok?!! I'll pay shipping!!Seems kinda crazy to me to toss a saw when you can sharpen a blade perfectly (with the right gear) for $20 - $40. Sorta like buying a new car when the ashtrays are full, but I know it happens...I take the approach of buying really good blades (Forrest, Dimar, Tenyru, etc...) and sharpening when dull. Works for me... there's nothing like a really high quality blade tuned to perfection. Most, but not all, stock blades are mediocre. Some though, like the Makitas, are very nice.Scott.Always remember those first immortal words that Adam said to Eve, “You’d better stand back, I don’t know how big this thing’s going to get.â€
I've done some home sharpening of mediocre blades with a diamond hone to the backside of the teeth. Works OK if you have some time.
+1 Dull blade is making the smoke.
In my experience, once the magic smoke escapes a motor it stops working altogether.
The awful thing is that beauty is mysterious as well as terrible. God and the devil are fighting there, and the battlefield is the heart of man.

If you get a dewalt replacement blade, get the blade without paint on the teeth. The blade should "slide" through the material being cut. If you have to push then its blunt.
