Thanks to feedback from the forum, I picked up a cheap turbine HVLP gun from Horrible Freight (44677, also the same as the Rockler/Woodcraft setup, and the actual gun appears to be the same as the low end Earlexs) to spray my MDF cabs with sealcoat and WB poly.
It worked most excellent on the shelves I tested the gun and the shellac/poly combo on. Last night when I was shooting the final coat of poly, I noticed that the pattern appeared to be off, and when I inspected the sprayer tip, it had poly “snot” built up around it. I wiped it off and continued to spray, which corrected the pattern issues, but I had to wipe it clean every 5 to 10 min.
Is this normal behavior for a turbine gun? Any way to prevent it or is it just a result of the hot air from the turbine? I was using Parks satin WB floor poly if that matters at all. It was muggy last night, and I was spraying in the backyard under worklights, so perhaps the conditions weren’t great…
Thanks,
Z

Water based and slow curing finishes do that. Lac. and Shellac not quite as bad due to the solvent remelting the tip build.
So, pretty normal.

Cool beans, I was worried that the gun was either #### (it sprays quite well in my limited experience) or that I was doing something horribly wrong. Impressed with the WB poly, cures fast and doesn't smell at all. With the shellac under it, it looks close to a couple of test pieces I did with oil based poly. Not as warm, but close.Z
