Had to go into town to-day, so decided to get the cartridge for my Moen faucet that I asked about last week. Being the Good Canadian that I am, I went to Home Hardware to get it. Surly kid didn’t know anything.
Told me I had to bring in the old cartridge. I said it was a single lever kitchen. Said there were too many cartridges to choose from. Told him that my faucet was the exact one hanging there on the wall. Told me he didn’t have the box for that faucet, and they had way too many for him to bring them all out for me to look at. I left.
Drove over to Home Depot. Asked guy for cartridge for Moen faucet. He opened drawer, pulled it out, said no charge, and told me how to install it. And was friendly. Told me there was only one cartridge for Moen kitchen faucets.
I know, this isn’t typical for Home Depot, but while I was there, I bought a new shower head. Hey, are they ever getting fancy. Home Hardware lost out on a sale.
Bad news, heard Loews is building a store somewhere around here ?Hamilton. know you guyrs really aren’t impressed with them.

I would drive 15 miles past a home depot to go to lowes.

I would have to drive farther than 3 Home Depots to get to the closest Lowes. I guess in most areas Lowes is the helpful place HD used to be (I had heard great stories years ago).
I still find the HD employees in my area useless overall, however, there is a very helpful guy in the electrical section at the one I use. He actually threw me off a bit. I tend to send the overly earger off to search for the item I don't expect to find, but he just zipped back with it explaining the odd reason the item was in another aisle....that's not a mistake, it's rustic
every HD has a few like that...
but they don't seem to last long....

Where I live, we have a HD about 4 miles away. I was just talking to a competent and commented to her on how she is probably one of the best in knowing her stuff and she then tells me that today was her last day because she is transferring to another store. Seems that all the good workers transfer to the other store once they have thir 90 days in.
She then tells me that they hired another 30 people and at least 20 didn't pass the drug test. She said that maybe 1-2 of this group might make it.
Another guy is a retired/disabled sherrif and works there part time but gets called at least once or twice everday that he is not working to come and fill in for someone else. On a daily basis, there are maybe 5 people that are competent, the rest are dead weight.
They have a new +/- 20 yr old working in the plumbing dept everyday and knows nothing about plumbing, but he does try. He is probably the only one that passed his drug test and actually shows up for work. Saw him in a resturante with a wife and young child... so that explains it
It's really tough to find good help that cares about what they are trying to sell - and the HD really doesn't help you much when you get hired. I worked at HD for maybe 3+ years - my first day consisted of some light training and pk classes (product-knowledge) - then it was out into the garden/outside building materials area on one of the busiest saturdays that a summer has to offer.
I got cursed at, bullied, and just about anything else you can imagine. There was no on-the-job training, nobody to show me the ropes, to let me listen in as they answered the common questions. It was all about being able to "read the box" faster than the customer - period.
I give HD until 2010 - beyond that they are on borrowed time.
That said: I was in a HD last week and received some excellent help from the guy in the plumbing department. I was trying to hook up a utility sink to some real old plumbing, and was having trouble creating a reasonable set of extensions, couplers, and reducers to bring the old plumbing back to the year 2006 - the guy was knowledgeable, patient, and very polite. You're damn right I made sure he knew it too - thank them when they do a good job. Justin Fink - FHB Editorial

I suspect the local management comes into play somewhat. We've got 2 HDs and 2 Lowes (with a 3rd about to open). Both of the HDs are clown shows, but there is a marked difference between the two Lowes. One of them has basically the same employees that it had when it opened 6-7 years ago and they mostly know their products (one lady in hardware is fantastic). The other Lowes is better than HD on all accounts, but I never see the same employees there for any length of time.

Home Depot and Lowes all have the same problem. You pay peanuts you get monkeys!
I have both within 5 miles. Hate them with a passion. Every time I go in, i come out feeling stupider - as if just breathing their air sucks out common sense and intelligence
That Lowes closest to you is the one that both son and daughter of the previous owners of my house , work at.
I hope that is the better of the two, I can get a discount at that one. Sadly, I rarely get over that side of town. Heck, I sppend more time at our Lowes, than either in Lex.
I heard HD is coming to Richmond, out on the bypass, I'll pass it twice a day. That actually will be good, cuz if I need something in the AM, I'd have to back track to get to Lowes, and the college traffic is horrendous.
That new Lowes out there off Winchester Rd, will be good for me, I seem to pass at least close to there no matter where we are working.

I used to give pk classes at Depot. What a joke. All they wanted was doughnuts delivered at 6:30 am on a weekend.
"- thank them when they do a good job." When I find someone that helpful, I ask for the store manager and thank him/her for hiring someone who does such a good job.BruceT
Some companies do not get the idea that poor help costs the company. Good helps pays.
