J.,
What's the finished soffit material?

j. smith - Good question. I suggest that you consider topping out the split face coursing with a non-split block of the same color, so you don't have a nasty scribe condition. Do you need a bond beam course up at this level anyway? Perhaps you could work in some split/non-split detailing into the overall design? If you don't like the idea of 2 block textures, how about a non-split course with a fascia board cover? The fascia board would probably have to turn the corner (cornice return too?) to cover the ends of non-split blocks.
Another suggestion if it
i must
be split face to the soffit - scribe a 1 x 4 to the block to start the soffit, paint it the same color as the block drop the soffit elevation slightly and vent the soffit continously in the difference. This way the screened vent won't show (faces the block)and the scribe won't be so noticeable. You'll have to carefully consider furring, and the appearance at the ends, if gable-ended.
Just my 2 cents.
b Been there, done that, can't remember ...
*if you extend your top plate so it overhangs apx. 1.5 inches... then you can install your soffit against it...this would be a good place for a vinyl ((J)) channel and a vinyl soffit..the split face is not that irregular that the J-channel would still look good...the consistency is what is important in this detail..if you don't want that much irregularity, don't use split-face...
*The split face block available to us is very irregular and you could not butt a soffit into it. I would suggest that you figure at what elevation you want your soffit to return to the wall (this would also involve your roof pitch and overhang) and either add a 1/2 course of regular block or double top plates or whatever works out so that your soffit returns just flush with the top of the split face block. I have done this many times with brick.
