   1. either way works.... after means you can be more precise.. before means you cn save time & money

   2. depends  on the look you are trying to acheive..... your choice in both cases

   Build the soffits before you do the cabs.  But build them out to counter-depth, rather than to wallcab depth.  I prefer a depth of maybe 25 or 26 inches.

   That allows you to wire the new space for can lights, to get some needed task lighting down on those countertops.  I prefer Juno's 3" cans, or if on a bigger budget, the little 12V thingies from someone like Premier.

   If you make the soffit flush, any inconsistency will be obvious. A little "reveal" will hide the inconsistency.

   I like Gene's idea, put the can lights in the soffit.

   Reveal & shadow lines are two different animals in my Zoo....and no one has mentioned crown or other transition mouldings over the cabs...

   Reveal is the offset between, for example, the edge of a jamb and the applied casing...
   In my zoo, shadow line usually implies a rabbit, painted black, where you aren't using trim or casing to cover a joint....

   I look at, or should I say, I see shadow lines as any change in trim/walls/planes..........

   Probably more semantics then anything or more a quirk on my part.
