when I tried to use my fairly new Makita AVT recip saw (it has soft start and variable speed) today on two different AFCI protected 20A circuits today I triped the breakers each time.
Any one know if this is typical? It worked fine on a regular breaker

Thanks. And how right Buckey was!
this weekend is turning into a GFI / AFCI extravaganza.....)
I suspect that you are seeing the " normal " operation of an AFCI that is not a combination type....with your specific saw
tha's OK cuz those combo things ...even though they are not available....don't seem to work either .!
there are two other conversations going on here about AFCIs and their proposed future.
