All 2x softwood we're using is coming from Austria. It's pretty good stuff right out the hack, about 15% culls. In about 2 weeks, we spend about a 1/2 day trying to get the twist out of about 15% of what we nail in the walls. Price is currently less than same time last year.

Are you talking about the Canadian softwood lumber tarriffs, or somehting else?
The last couple of NAFTA rulings have all been in Canada's favour, and the U.S had indicated that it was going to comply....they have already recalculated the tarriffs down.....I think we're still waiting for a WTO ruling (there was one in February, but I think another is coming soon, there are several softwood cases before them.....I pay more attention to NAFTA than WTO because it's more important).....some signals that it was going to go in favour of the U.S. In which case, you know Canada will appeal.
And in the meantime, lots of Eastern European and European lumber around......hugely subsidized industries there, but noone seems too worried about that.Cabinetmaker/college woodworking instructor. Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
Hmmm .... Will this affect plywood prices over the next couple months?
-- J.S.
Ply is more of a manufactured product and is somewhat more energy dependent too. prices for all sheet goods like plywood have traditionally been more effected by plant capacity vs market demand, the former sometimes manipulated and the later too often unanticipated

Sheet goods have been fairly low here for a while. Maybe it's winter or something. I know you're planning your roof (is that it?) and need some quantities, and it might be a good time to lay it in. Certainly don't wait until the days get long.
Yeah. I need a couple lifts of 1/2" Struct #1 to sheath the place. That or I could sell it to the guy next door who wants to cut it up into apartments. Pretty soon I have to decide whether to take the money and run, or buy the ply.....

You're in LA... yow... is the bubble gonna burst... will it hold up... can you sell in 5 years for more or less than today... how about in 2... take the money and run... hang in there and maybe make an extra hundred large...
Tough questions. I am very glad I don't have to wrestle with that. Are you already seeing longer market times and less competitive bidding?
Yes, it's slowing a little. The question is, is it a blip or a crash?
-- J.S.
I don't start any disputes with my lumber even if it is soft hearted and easy going. It is what holds my houses up so I try to get along with it.

The Americans have lost 7 appeals to the ruling and still have the 4 billion in tariffs that belong to the Canadian Lumber Companies. Rick Mercer did an excellent report on the situation a few weeks ago as only Rick Mercer can.
I thought once Stephen Harper got in he was going to make this issue a priority.
Have a good day

Another new NAFTA ruling hot off the press......further recalculating the countervailing tarriff down to .80%.....anything under 1.00 automatically goes to zero....so it's zero. Anti-dumping is still at 2.11, but that's a long way from the over 27% combined tarriffs we started with. And that was a unanimous panel decision with 3 Americans, 2 Canadians on the panel.
The Coalition will keep pushing no doubt; we'll have to see whether Commerce keeps backing them. I'd post a link, but everything is slowed up here right now.
Adrian : what good is NAFTA if the people signed on to it won't accept the rulings handed down if it dosent suit them (read USA)
By the time they wake up the chinese will have bought up the lumber and not squacking when they do it
The biggest consumer of energy in the world is situated just below what it appears is soon to become the largest source in the world according to some of theyre own analists
we arent called the blue eyed arabs for nothing
You guys gonna dig up all that sand??
were currently in the last phases of approval to build a large set of pipelines from the youkon and alaska to the lower 48 states
this project is so large and will consume so much pipe it has to be built over several years as the pipe and labour supply is so tight the two cant be built at the same time
the tar sands are such a huge undetakig that they are sucking up skilled trades people from as far as the maritimes , they are even flying in hamburger flippers from the maritimes
Canada is the only G8 country to have a trade surplus for nearly 10 years thanks mainly to oil
we are the largest supplier of energy to the USA 33%
Weexport 43% of our oil

Well sure. It's so damn cold up there that hydro provides all the energy needed for the 87 people who can stand it. ;-)
PS: I actually like Canada. My better half is Canadian so I'm on a hair trigger with the Canadian come backs.
