Source for hot water storage tanks?
Anybody have sources for (well) insulated water storage tanks- I’m looking for some tanks in the 60-120 gallon range. Don’t need the heating source, just a storage tank that has inlet and outlet pipes.
thanks!

Probably cheaper to buy an electric water heater than to buy a purpose-made tank.
the builditsolar website had an article about solar water heating and homemade water storage tanks.
if you cant buy them, but you can decide on the just what you want it might be cheaper to have it constructed by a local contractor or welding shop.
I cann't imagine that you can buy a well insulated tank for less than an electric water heater...just don't hook it up!
I'm confused! Basically, if you take the heating element and controls out of an electric hot water heater, you're left with a well insulated tank. So why is an off-the-shelf "well insulated tank" more expensive than the electric hot water heater?? what am I missing here?
I have seen the DIY tank on the Build It Solar site (awesome site, by the way), and that is an option. I was hoping to find a round, tall tank that would fit into the space normally occupied by the electric heater.
thanks Shawn
volume and specialization. One HD store probably sells more electric water heaters than all of the storage only tanks sold in the whole US..
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Ahhh, thanks for the insight. That makes sense.Shawn
These are the guys we use often for large systems. http://hansontank.com/watertanks.html
they have some small shelf stock items, but I'm not sure they can beat the box stores prices.

I've used used tanks ... tanks that someone takes out ... they replace the tank thinking the tank is bad and it is just the element ... or they are upsizing. I got one for free to use as a preheat tank for my water heater. Go to your local used building materials shop or to your local plumber who may have a bunch sitting in his bone yard. Used tanks don't always have holes in them.
Commercial applictions use insulated storage tanks all the time ... You should be able to locate one. They have to be pressure rated ... assuming your application is under pressure.
