Hi All,
Started putting the mahogany porch decking on this week, had some rain next day, that floor looks beautiful when wet, a sneak preview of what it will look like when finished.
Looking on the internet for a source of threads, 8 ft length with no return was 175.00, plus tax and shipping. Anyone have a source with better pricing and good products? I would even consider buying 2×10’s if there is such a thing and finishing them myself.
Thanks
Kevin

Most decks I've seen employ the same material for "treads" as for the decking. Just curious why you aren't considering doing the same? You want it to match, no? If you are just looking for wider stock, you can glue up deck stock, then route a roundover edge.
There are many different species of wood that are marketed as "mahogany" so I'd be cautious buying stock other than what you are using for the decking if you really want it to match.
The deck this wood came off of had solid threads and I liked the look. Unfotunately they were destroyed when they were removed. I have considered using the same material for the steps, I won't have enough long lengths to do the front steps without joints, side steps maybe. Just looking at all the options.
As to matching what I have, there's a guy 10 minutes from me who sells the stuff, I'll bring a sample of my stuff and match it best I can. I need about 5, 8 footers to finish without any joints. Porch decking is perpendicular to the house, the old fashioned way.
Thanks
Kevin
Solid treads don't shed the rain as well as smaller boards--that's one reason they're not more popular. They do look nice though.
What is your deck material, really? "Mahogany decking" is usually Meranti or Mangaris, could be spanish cedar, could be khaya...
bought it used so I'm not sure what it is, it does look exactly like the cheap mahogany interior doors, the hollow core ones you see in homes.
It's probably Meranti, also known as Luann.
You might ask at a hardwood dealer for African mahogany (Khaya or Sapele) 6/4 or 8/4 stock. Won't be cheap but will match close enough and cost less than Honduran Mahogany.
googled the stair threads, turns out one of the hits was a guy 6 miles from me. Lots of nice stuff in his showroom. 5/4 x 8 was 3.25 per ln ft, no side returns with bull nose front. About 40 bucks for an 8 footer, not bad. If I bought the T&G 1x4 and glued it up it would be 24 bucks. I wonder about the rain shed ability, not sure how one is going to be different from the other.
There's one 5/4 x 12 x 8'er laying in the mud in front of a house I'm working on... really. 6,000sq', sided with t&G horizontal, 4' overhangs with t&g bead board, 2x8 fascia... all mahogany. Not a stick of it inside... can't figure out what that tread's for. Winterlude, Winterlude, my little daisy,
Winterlude by the telephone wire,
Winterlude, it's makin' me lazy,
Come on, sit by the logs in the fire.
The moonlight reflects from the window
Where the snowflakes, they cover the sand.
Come out tonight, ev'rything will be tight,
Winterlude, this dude thinks you're grand.
"can't figure out what that tread's for"ME, send it UPS:)

Last time I was there I was blown away at how much Mahogany stock they had. Stair treads w/ bullnose, long lengths, too.
