We put a large Mud Room in our recent addition (5 kids). Our idea is to put a Bench for puttin on shoes with drawers below the bench for shoes. We would like tall cubbies, or locker type cabs on top of the bench for coats, backpacks, and all the rest of the kid’s crap.
I’m looking for a source for these types of cabinets. Not sure Kitchen cabinets would work. Are there lines made specifically for the Mud Room? My ideal would be to get knock downs to install myself. Any help would be appreciated.
TIA

What kind of style are you looking for? LL Bean, Pottery Barn and the like carry mudroom furniture like you describe.

On a recent job we wrapped up the client had five kids, so they are in your league.
they wanted to keep cost in mind so we bought bifold doors from Home Depot and
separated them. Each half forming a stand up locker. Inside we constructed a lower
part for shoe storage and an upper part for back packs that had hooks. The doors
stay shut with simple magnets and the handles were selected to match the exterior
door hardware to tie it. We also had made at a local trophy shop name plates made
for the kids. Next to the cubbies was a small bench seat. The base and crown should
wrap around the cubbies and encase the room to give it a built in look. We used MDF
to build the separate boxes. On the opposing wall we installed beadboard
and capped the top off with a piece of 1x4 which we installed hooks in for additional
space or play dates jacket and packs. The beadboard also acts as a shield for the
gypsum board because this room is filled with kids and gets banged up a lot.
I don't have a photo of thoses cubbies but I have a photo of another if you would like
something more basic.
GOOD LUCK!!
Design it, submit the design as a quote request to http://www.scherrs.com, and they will make the whole thing for you as an RTA (ready to assemble) package.
Here is an example of a design for a kitchen they'll make for us. Google Sketchup was used for doing the work. The easy to learn 3D package is a free download from Google.

Heights, widths, and depths of all carcase boxes can be totally custom. The species of the wood for the fronts can be chosen from a huge array of possibilities, and you can get them prefinished, or sanded and bare for you to do your finishing on site.
Gene,How long does it take to get cabs. from Scherrs? Is the shipping reasonable? What is the quality of the finish on their cabs? Do they replace damaged cabs quickly?Bottom Line - do they have a quality product that they stand behind?
Right now they are probably out to November, but you should find out by calling Leon Scherr. Tell him I said hello.
Unless you are in ND, there will be no sales tax on the order. We believe their shipping rates to be fair.
You need to remember that that as cab types go, Scherr's is a euro-style 32mm frameless type, 3/4" carcase sides, tops, floors, dividers, shelves, with 1/4" backs. You do know the diff between this and faceframed cabs, right?
We typically spec the highest quality hardware and fittings and drawer types we can, getting drawers and pullouts in 5/8" hard maple with dovetailed corners, maple ply bottoms, and Blum Tandem full extension slides with Blumotion dampening.
They will make you drawerfronts and doors at 13/16" thickness or 1" thickness, whichever you specify.
We have always appreciated their attention to quality and service. Their packaging is done well, and the very few damaged things we've had have been dealt with quickly and with a smile.
Mike - depending on your carpentry skills (I'm a reasonably skilled DIYer, not a pro by any means) you might be able to build them from scratch as I did. The pics below show my recently remodeled mudroom. The cherry cabinets are from Kraftmaid, but I built the cubbies from scratch. I built 8 MDF boxes (the top and bottom sections are separate), made the bench seat from MDF, and made the face frames from poplar. Took a couple of days. They work great.
