Source for rising butt hinges?

xxPaulCPxx | Posted in General Discussion on August 17, 2006 10:09am

I’ve got a door that needs to rise as it is opened to clear carpet/rugs, so I was looking around for rising butt hinges.

Is there anyone here who has a prefered source for these?  This is what I have seen so far:

It's always fun to look at what VanDykes has. In a hardware store, I'm like the proverbial kid in the candy store! Sorry it didn't help you. I forgot about Lee Valley.

I was watching a John Wayne movie the other day and I could swear that the barroom doors that he came in through raised and then lowered with brass hindges.

    Or maby a partition company.

Lee Valley might have some.  They have a fairly thick hardware catalog I haven't looked through yet.

They're not on the web site, but you might ask Clement Hardware if they can get them for you.  Their price on the hinges I used on my windows is 13% less than the site you found.

The copper run-up has impacted the price of brass hinges.  The ones I got for $1100 would cost $2400 today.

Thanks for the tip!  I called them though and they said they couldn't get anything like that for me.

It seems strange that a product like this that could potentially be a real problem solver is so hard to find.  Everybody knows what it is, but nobody can get it!Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA

The basic problem here is that we're all experts on sagging butts. Rising butts are a foreign concept to us.

Have you tried this place? I found it when I googled "rising hinges".

I saw that before too.  That is a business to business site though.  Another one similar to it offered minimal quantities of 5000 pairs!Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA

You might broaden your search a bit and search for "Self-closing" hinges.  Like the ones in restaurant kitchen doors.  Some have springs, but a lot have the 'rising' hinges.

In 1997, I got some from Renovater's Supply, but they stopped carrying them since. You did briliantly finding the sources you did!

Apparently they are all the rage in the UK!  I had a bunch of sites from there pop up in my search... now I'm negotiating with a guy with a box of 5 pairs for sale - we'll see what happens!Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA
