I do not want wood, this is a retrofit, as [porck is in place, hoping to support, column is hollow??? Then add 4×4 inside, slide in place? toe nail?? install base and top cap to hide space I had for toenails? or do I buy structural supporting columns? Please assist, as I am unsure who to go to for best non-wood(no rot ect), retrofit ofcoloumns, thanks to all, Dave

Just shooting from the hip, I would think it would be easier to get PVC or vinyl or fiberglass fluted columns (load bearing) and take the weight off the existing to get them out by using and "A" frame of 2X4's and replace what you've got.
Try one of these (I googled "architectural columns")"

That's just the first five (of many). My preference is to build the support first (4x4, 4x6, whatever), then clad that. For craftsman style pyramid columns, it's about the only way. Does let the decorative column be decorative, and the structure be structural. There are about as many ways to fasten as there are fasteners.
