Doing up the permit plans for a remodel job and have an span /codebook question.
The plan is to take two 2nd floor bedrooms that have closets between them and make a master suite. The current ceiling joists which support a third floor bedroom. span the 11 ft of one bedroom, the 2′ 2′ closet and then the 11ft of the 2nd bedroom. They are rough cut actually six 2 in wide by 7 in high, 16 in O.C. And Yes they are the full 24′ plus long. No splices in the whole span.
What we want to do is remove one of the closet walls, this will increase the span of the ceiling joists from 11 ft to 13 ft 2″ if nothing else is done.
A standard SPF 2×8 (1.5 x 7.25) is code acceptable for 13 ft 4″ the way I read the Mass Code book. So my gut tells me nothing else needs to be done.
Does anyone have any experience on how 75 yr old rough cut lumber is treated in the span tables???
