I took my Ferguson tractor to the local MF dealer. I asked for the estimate. They drew one up and then had the temerity to ask me if they could charge the estimate amount even if the problem was simpler then they thought and it cost them less to fix it.

Here's the quick. We all deal with large money transactions, always write up the spec.s and get sig.'s all the way around. Why then did I give an unknown(to me) mechanic over 4K for a rebuilt engine install w/o getting the spec.s in writing? Long story short. Wife's engine blew. Know Jasper is reputable, national company and called for local installer. This after checking junkyard swaps, dealership new and rebuilds and just selling the car. Decided to pay more for the Jasper(less than dealer) and keep a car we love.(Never love a car!) Go to the Jasper installer, have a rebuilt engine installed, then break....twice. No prob, warrenty and such...another rebuild/install....then break. This started LAST Sept! JUST now figure why Jasper can't find us in the computer....the installer went with a "quicker" company from Ohio...."must have been a misunderstanding"...."I'm sure you or the wife o.k.'d the other co." Well, after various threats of legal and not so legal means, we are now about to have the non-Jasper taken out-refunded-and have a Jasper installed. Now, as I think about it....why the hell did I NOT get a signed service contract with Jasper specified? We do this all the time! No one trusts a contractor, but we trust every other transaction we do! Just a word of warning and 20/20 Hindsight. Next time I'm spending 4K for a new motor....if no contract is available, I'll just whip out the old trusty Buck Const. 3-parter....write it up real quick( and REAL specific) and everyone will have a copy! Beware of "honest misunderstandings"! Ready for law school now, Jeff
*The last time I had my car at the dealership, I asked for an estimate in writing. I got a number written down on another business's memo pad. No description of work, just a dollar amount.Never went back.Rich Beckman
*Jeff - the answer to your question "Why then did I give an unknown(to me) mechanic over 4K for a rebuilt engine install w/o getting the spec.s in writing?" seems obvious to me. You are an honest man yourself, so you expect others to be honest as well. Hasn't failed me yet.

*Hey Frank - I thought I was the only one around here with a Fergie. What kind do you have ? I cut my teeth on MF equipment, and have a MF35 of my own.
