I have some columns that have been sitting in storage for some years and now that I am going to use them outdoors I need to repair some splitting and fill some gaps that I will not be able to close. What suggestions do you have for glue and filling the gaps.

First you need to know if these will be structural columns as installed and find someone who can assure you if they are still load worthy. Repairs may be cosmetic only.
For filling splits in glue separation, I would use Minwax wood filler and sand.

I just completed the very same thing, 2 14'' dia. fluted columns. These were originally hide glued with 12 staves, a T&G type of register key.
I removed the plinth and the whole thing fell a part. Here's what ya do..try to open it up, the more apart the better.
Clean off old glue, scrapers are a must. Have some clamps, either strap, or innertube strips, or rope and a stick in worse case.
I use Titebond III for reglueing, if there are craks or joints ya can't easily get apart, use a hacksaw, jigsaw, sawzall blade to scrape the sides clean...mix TBIII with "Durhams Rockhard Water Putty" schmear it in the cracks and level it IMMEADIATLY, it is real tuff after set up.
Sand the repairs, and prime..that'll do ya.

I Use gorllia Glue or any polurethane glue and then use mechanical straps to sinch it together. I use small 1'' x6" blocks to keep the straps from getting all full of glue.
