What is the best way to repair scratches in a wood floor without stripping and refinishing the whole floor?

IF the finish is shellac simply take a rag dampened with denatured alcohol and rub back and forth for a few seconds..
It helps if you have little children watching to say the words abra cadabra hookis pookis alakzam!

Tape off the single board with blue tape along the joints on all 4 sides so that you can reapply some finish to that board and only that board. if it is several boards you will have an irregular pattern of boards taped off along their length and width. Other wise with most finishes, if you just applied the finish you would get a puddle effect, which you still are getting, the tape on the board joints just helps hide the puddle and makes it look uniform.

Is it stained or just finishedIf there aer microbevels between boards, it was prefinished - probably with AL OX that is super hard to scratch or to repair.If you can rub it out with denatured alcohol, it was shelac and easiest to solve.Most are one kind of polyurethane or another.Oil based poly has an amber tone it imparts tot he wood bringing out the beauty. water based tends to look very clear and like plastic.There are satin to high gloss surfaces.Also there is oil finish such as watco that are easy to repair by rubbing more in.
I have oil based poly on mine and have used clear Watco to rub in to repair scratches in it
