I own a typical New style cape that has several out building. Hence alot of roof/attic area.
It is traditionally built with 2×10 ceiling joists and r30 fiberglass insulation.
the good news is that the easy attic access to large sections of the house allowed me to have a central air conditioning system installed for a very price. But I have notice a fair amount of cold air leaking thru those ceiling vents even when closed.
I have used spray in poly-iso on a few customer jobs and love it,When someone else is paying!!
But I am thinking that putting in my ceiling joists in the attic will
improve my heating efficiency pretty dramatically. And it should help
in the summer with the AC operation as well
Has any done this??
Summarizing eliminate the cold vented attic with a spray foam directly applied to the roof sheathing. try to keep the attic temp closer to house temp.

You mean like this?
Corbond sprayed into 2 x 6 rafter space. Cost $1875 for about 550 sq ft in two attic spaces. Had to disconnect the second floor HVAC to get the ducts out of the way. With the system still shut down the upstairs is perfectly comfortable even with the outside night temp in the 20s.
Steve.
Yes, similar although the product I have used is a poly-iso FoamHere are a few pictures of the current attic; One thing that might throw the decision over the edge is that the
space will now not have wild temp extremes. As you can see we use it for alot of storage.
