Has anyone used spray foam insulation? I talked to a contractor and he says its the best stuff to insulate with. also he says you don’t vent your attic. It’s expensive 1.20$ a foot. Any help would be appreciated.

I love this discussion but I agree it's really been done to death..
However I agree with your guyit's the best (unless you build with SIP's)
I've used on my home although not in the roof. Although more expensive I feel it is well worth it. The house is not only comfortable and draft free, but also quieter than conventional insulation. If it is your own home definitely do it, otherwise you have to see if you can recover the added cost.
I'm always curious when i hear that somebody did not use the foam on the whole job. the top is where most heat is lost andspraying top and sills is how you control infiltration, which can account for a major portion of heat loss. So why did you modify your system and did you also skip the sills?

Most of the data I read was specific to warmer climates than I was installing it in. Even the customer reps weren't too reassuring about the application. I was tempted, but didn't want to be a trail blazer in the event something bad would happen later.
I didn't skip the sills.
Piffin, do you guys worry at all with foam around your sills that any moisture that does get in there (either through a leak or from the foundation) will have no place to get out? I guess I'm thinking in terms of what I (and you, I suspect) deal with mostly which is rubble/fieldstone foundations and 6X6 or 8X8 sills. I've actually never worked on a house less than 90 years old!!

I don't worry about that in the least. In that type of house and foundation, most of the moisture wil be coming from condensation, from the inside. The foam will stop that.
If it is from leaks in the exterior, you have an entirely different problem to correct, and the foam won't make a difference one way or the other.

My take on it, is less moisture is absorbed by the foam than FG, so any leak would become apparent sooner consequently getting repaired with less damage. Like the Tucson, I shall rise again from the ashes.
