As the nearest rental blower to spread the cellulose I want to put in my attic is 1 1/2 hours away my plan was to spread it by hand. I gather it needs to be reasonably well broken up to work most effectively. Any tips or tricks on breaking up all these small to medium size chunks?
Thanks.

Drive the 1-1/2 hours. PLEASE!
You mean the 6 hours total? :-)
Care to elaborate?
Thanks.

Done in a 3' x 3' x 3' box with an canoe paddle. Tough and a mess, mess, mess, mess. Then get it up through a hole smaller than the 3 x 3. Into another box . . .
Any questions? LOL
You won't be able to break it up and fluff it by hand enough for it to get the required air spaces to create the desired r-factor, and won't get the coverage by far.
I'd rather spend 6 hours driving and relaxing to the radio tunes than the 20 hours of fluffing with a canoe paddle, then humping it into an attic in bags or some other vessel that hold a small amout.....let us know how it comes out though.
I get the message. Just wish the attic was larger than 12 x 16, to make it SEEM like the drive was more worthwhile! :)Thanks.

Buy more pacages of cells and put them in the attic tightly abbuting each other . instant dense pack no mess .
It doesn't work by hand. I think I would call a contractor and blow a couple feet up there. It really not that much money and let them do the wotk.
Why not use fiberglass batts?
Primarily all the discussions on this board, in the last couple of years. You pays your money and you takes your choice. :-)

for your information: It cost me $900 for a crew to come out and blow 2 feet in a 1200 sq ft house. That labor, material, tax, cleanup, everything. took them 4 hr to do the job. I thought it was well worth the money.
I've got a leaf hog or ?by black and decker. I take and put the shop vac hose in the out, It's the 2+1/4" fits perfect and blow how ever much you want. plus when your done you get to blow of the sidewalks and such. I'm on my second one, HD replaced the first after I burned it up, blew 30 bags of insullfill{Certainteed}. I do have bunches of the shop vac hose which helps consideralbley. I 'd add hose to regulate the amout of air comming out. Not perfect but hey you do what you have to do.

I figured someone here would have a method like this! :-) Might have tried it, but it turns out family members have to make that long drive several times next week, and can haul the 'free' blower for me.
Thanks to all.
