Has anyone tried to build the Spiral stairs from the book “Floors,Walls and Stairs” page 64. The design is an hollow post spiral stair. The article is excelent and the reference to the builders mistakes is worth its weight in gold. I’m almost done with the stair case that I went off his design. I’m to the ppint of the railing, he laminated peices of oak 1/8 thick together. is there any advice on this..like something I should watch out for? I never did this sprial thing before…But the rest of the project turned out beautifull. Another thing is the handrail itself, I was thinking of a much more decorated style, in put is very much appreciated.
Thanks Bud

Bud: I built this hollow post one early this year. It was a clone from the article in FH I had read several years ago.

Bud: This is the same design except in maple and poplar with a split handrail.
All these are very nice, thank you...I think that railing is a great idea. I also noticed that all the post show (real or decorative?) tenons through? The one I built has no through tenons. 8 sides (It was a real trick gluing that up) one side open so I can access the 1/2 bolts. Maybe we are talking about different stairs...either way thay look real nice. Also, Looks like you guys are pros...A free standing winding stair case to build..only in my dreams.
How are the images attached?
Bud
Bud: I know the stairs that you are talking about now..Sorry..I sent the pictures of a different kind. I have never built one like you are talking about..I have that book.
Thanks for the info...i'll be here often.
Merry Christmas

Bud: Here are some pictures showing the mortised column...the jug to route that mortise...and the tread/tread support assembly that tenons into the column.
